Glasgow Distillery Teams With Rangers FC On Whisky Trilogy

Douglas Laing & Co have teamed up with the most successful football club in Scottish football to create a somewhat unique whisky investment trio.

The Glasgow-based distillery has created the 2023 Trilogy Series, which are three distinct whisky bottles each themed around one of the Rangers colours and are said to take people on a flavour journey across Scotland.

There is the red “Sweet One”, which uses Speyside whisky and the dark fruit, honeycomb and barley notes that comes with it.

Meanwhile, the deep blue “Smoky One” uses a mix of Islay peated Malt, which Douglas Laing themselves claim gives it an “oceanic quality” and an earthy sweetness.

Finally, there is the fruity one, which has tropical fruit and vanilla notes that call to mind a mix between a whisky and a spiced rum.

Alongside these, the company also sells knitted Rangers scarves to decorate the bottleneck.

It has released in time to celebrate the tenth anniversary of Rangers FC’s return since their somewhat ignominious ‘big tax case’, liquidation and insolvency in 2011 after years of financial losses and financial irregularities.

Once the assets of the old Rangers were bought by the Sevco Scotland consortium, a 10-1 vote by members of the Scottish Premier League (Kilmarnock abstained, and the old Rangers company voted in favour) kicked them out of Scotland’s top flight.

Eventually, after several penalties were agreed to, the Scottish Football League allowed them to play in the Third Division. It took them four years to make it back to the SPL and won the league in the 2020/21 season, breaking a near-decade of Celtic FC dominance and reviving the famous Old Firm rivalry.

Time will tell whether these commemorative whisky bottles will appreciate in value and under what context, but for the fans at Ibrox, this is a way to toast their favourite team and their return to glory.
